I done a fresh install on a Dell Inspiron 8100 of SuSE 8.1. It was the smoothest and easiest install that I have ever had from RH 7.2, SuSE 7.3, SuSE 8.0, and Mandrake 8.2. Even the YOU update for the Nvidia GeForce2 Go drivers went smooth and it was the first time I did not have to edit XF86Config file or switch2nvidia. Even ran the YOU for KDE 3.04, which took about an hour and a half on DSL at work, and it went off without a hitch. It booted up with internet access from Win2K network automatically and the setup with LinNeighborhood was much smoother than previously for network file server access. Only hitch there was I had to chmod +4000 smbmnt. Only problem was Klaptop came up with error about improper ACPI. I updated the BIOS from the Dell website, but it still says need to add some kernel modules, so will have to work on that. There is a work around, but would like to get the ACPI working properly. Am quite impressed with the new 8.1. The desktop is much nicer than either 7.3 or 8.0 and it is much faster. It is unbelievable the amount of improvements in Linux in just a year. Another year and it will beat Windows in both installation and ease of use. A work college tried to install 8.1 with DVD, but it got to software installation and could not find the software. Seen a couple of emails on this list about this also. This seems to be that the DVD drive is also CDR/W. Installation with CDROM went OK other than he made an error on bootloader installation which crashed his MBR. He was dual booting with XP and using XP as boot manager. He went back to RH 8.0 though. He keeps installing various Linux's to try out. This weekend he is trying Mandrake 8.2 that I received with Walmart PC I ordered for my wife to replace ageing Compaq that was lame on memory (had the max of 48 Meg installed and no further expandable) and the disk was going bad. It now has SuSE 8.0, soon to have 8.1. My other computer at home will have 8.1 as soon as Win4lin has the kernel path for 8.1. Will be glad when Kapital has online banking, then I can get rid of that. Congratulations to the SuSE team and all of the other linux developers and keep up the good work. Art.
