The origin of geeko I believe comes from Hawaii. It refers to the common lizard there. Generally it is brown. James Knott wrote:

I suppose it is a pun on the name of the gecko which is a Chameleon-like animal found at least in California.
And all over southern Florida. I have one in the house right now I am having trouble catching to put back outside.
Is it green? ;-)
