When you log out your shell sends a SIGHUP to all its children. Usually that terminates the child processes. You can prevent this by starting your program with nohup program & or trap "" 1; program & or program &! (the last one only in the Z-Shell). But with all these there is no way to bring to process back into foreground after you logged in again (at least AFAIK).
