I really think that the fundamental issue that many folk seem to be missing is the following: Emerging software & standards: What seems to be emerging is a huge base of reasonably coherent UNIX-based software, which can be ported through a number of similar unix-clone operating systems. To me, it is this huge software base, together with emerging interface standards, rather than the interface to the relevant platform (through operating system) that is the significant issue. Whether the OS is Linux, or some other ultimate unix-clone variant, I do not really believe is important. The Open Source model, too, has created a completely different business model - along with a multitude of new possibilities for programmers to earn an honest wage for their labours. This philosophy allows developers to develop software which can be maintained and upgraded for many years, and so produce truly powerful packages - the software does not suddenly become obsolete merely because the OS is updated. This has been my experience with the Microsoft train - DOS, Windows, win95, win98, win2k ... End-users: I am currently using SuSE Linux for my business, and am happy to contribute to the necessary systems required to provide complete business coverage. I do see a number of areas that require serious work, but I am absolutely sure that all these gaps will eventually be filled in. I am currently also setting up a family computer - running SuSE 7.0. In fact, the only operating system my daughter knows is Linux - she does not need to be converted from Microsoft... <p>By the way, does anyone know of a Linux-based forum which is concentrating on business-related issues - eg. travelling communications etc...
