To answer my own question... The script is called from /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup so it appears BEFORE the login screen. Something like: xmessage -buttons OK:0,Cancel:1 -file warn.txt -center if [ $? == 0 ] then exit 0 else /sbin/reboot fi Thanks to those who answered.
It is possible to run custom programs when starting kdm, for instance to display an animated background. I've done that, but I don't quite remember where it is set; I **think** in /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/Xsession. Now if you started kdialog from that script I **think** it would be executed before the login dialog appears. Worth a try, isn't it.
