Actually, done right, it's both. If anybody wants to know how threading is done properly (Thunderbird has still deficiencies, AFAIR), jwz documented the Algorithm-To-Use(tm): http://www.jwz.org/doc/threading.html That document also supplies information about the relevant headers that goes beyond standards, with data to back it up. When I implemented my last MUA, I found that page invaluable. The approach presented there really works, all others have problems in some places.
