Hi.
On my SuSE 8.1 I have problems with my DVD drive. If I take ls options all seems to be ok.
The DVD is not visible in the /var/log/boot.msg file under the scsi emulation. Only visible is my CD-RW drive.
I installed 8.1 on another harddisk, and here all was working ok. The ls's was very equal to my not working install.
Here both my DVD and my CD-RW drives are visible in the boot.msg file.
Here I have the ls listings. First from the install with the non working DVD drive:
eurit:/dev # ls -l /dev/sr0 /dev/sr1 /dev/hdc /dev/hdd /dev/dvd /dev/cdrecorder lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Dec 25 21:25 /dev/cdrecorder -> /dev/sr1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Dec 28 09:57 /dev/dvd -> /dev/sr0 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 0 Dec 28 13:44 /dev/hdc brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 64 Sep 9 22:24 /dev/hdd brw------- 1 erik disk 11, 0 Dec 28 09:55 /dev/sr0 brw------- 1 erik disk 11, 1 Sep 9 22:24 /dev/sr1 eurit:/dev # ls -il /dev/sr0 /dev/sr1 /dev/hdc /dev/hdd /dev/dvd /dev/cdrecorder 158499 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Dec 25 21:25 /dev/cdrecorder -> /dev/sr1 65435 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Dec 28 09:57 /dev/dvd -> /dev/sr0 195610 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 0 Dec 28 13:44 /dev/hdc 33367 brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 64 Sep 9 22:24 /dev/hdd 65430 brw------- 1 erik disk 11, 0 Dec 28 09:55 /dev/sr0 38983 brw------- 1 erik disk 11, 1 Sep 9 22:24 /dev/sr1 eurit:/dev # ls -Il /dev/sr0 /dev/sr1 /dev/hdc /dev/hdd /dev/dvd /dev/cdrecorder /dev/cdrecorder /dev/dvd /dev/hdc /dev/hdd /dev/sr0 /dev/sr1
Output from /var/log/boot.msg:
<4>hda: ST340810A, ATA DISK drive <4>hdc: SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-612F, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive <4>hdd: HL-DT-ST GCE-8160B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive <4>ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14 <4>ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15

Now the output from the working 8.1 install:

Just add hdd=ide-scsi as a boot parameter and you'll see your DVD. Catimimi.
Hope to get valuable hints from you :-)
Thannks in advance.
