sane/hplip driving me, ur... not working

I have an HP PSC 1600 series printer/scanner. I installed this on my SuSE 9.3 laptop a while back and for the sake of starting hplip it "just worked" scanner and all. Now I'm trying to run this on a desktop machine (SuSE 9.3 also, but this one is 64 bit) and although hplip is running and the printer part works a treat, Xsane reports no sane devices.
