Sigh, I just spend 9 hours trying to get a functional win xp install done. Don't worry this regards Linux as well!!! The machine is a abit bx6 rev 2 with pentium III 550mhz. I removed every piece of hardware and only have floppy, brand new harddrive, one stick of memory and cdrom connected as well as AGP card. The thing had the newest BIOS and booted fine and ran Win98 for two years without problem. I flop in the CD and install XP and it reboots and tries to strat XP but I get the blue screen immediately! Bugger. I get a bad feeling right away. I reboot again and it stalls....again and another blue screen. I go flash to the older BIOS (note multiple, I tried about 5 of them). Each time the same result. The sucker will not boot XP. I get out my Win98 Cd and install that. It boots marvelously. No problems. I go and get a Mandrake 8.1 CD out and boot from it and it won't even do a Mandrake install but constantly reboot as soon as the kernel is loaded. I searched the net and I found quite a few threads complaining about XP blue screening and in many cases ABIT boards totally sucking with XP. I found one thread where a guy states he can install Win9x and run it perfectly but cannot install Linux, BSD or XP. The same is true in my case. http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&frame=right&th=b5b6671ee8e4a3ad&seekm=zNRZ6.14%24yc.6101%40nnrp1.ptd.net#link1 I know the disk drive is fine. I tried to AGP cards and two CDRoms. I know the Ram is fine and tried two different sticks. The damn board. I figure its some incompatibility with NT, Linux and BSd kernel because they are more advanced than win9x kernel which runs just fine. Love to hear if anybody had similar problems with same board or another Abit board, Suckered _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
