Yes. With SuSE kernel sources, you can just run "make cloneconfig" in the new kernel source tree and this will clone the configuration of the currently running kernel. With vanilla kernel sources (however, it works of course also with SuSE kernel sources), you can copy the existing old configuration (e.g. /boot/config-2.6.xyz or /usr/src/oldkernel/.config) to a file called .config in the new kernel source tree and then run "make oldconfig". Both approaches do not use a build directory, but you might not want to use one anyway...
