My /tmp directory is growing with various logs and contains many other files - Ordinarily I would have NO hesitation in periodically deleting the contents of most /tmp directories however as I relatively new to Linux I am concerned if this will cause problems. I ask the same question about the /var/tmp directory which grows and grows with significant impact to the amount of space its taking up. There are a massive number of sub directories below /var/tmp as well as an abundant number of files in that directory.

I've asked the same question on the suse-e list this march. Ken Schneider answered: ...The other way is to edit /etc/sysconfig/cron and change the setting for cleaning tmp dirs. # cron.daily can check for old files in tmp-dirs. It will delete all #files not accessed for more than MAX_DAYS_IN_TMP. If MAX_DAYS_IN_TMP is #not set or set to 0, this feature will be disabled. # MAX_DAYS_IN_TMP="30" ... This is what I did and since then my /tmp keeps about the same size.
