Is there a way to get the system to apply a low resolution when it sees a change in the graghics card or the monitor?
ISTR that there is a bug in SaX that means that it starts the server with the highest res your card can run, even if that is too high for the LCD screen. I had great difficulties with a Hercules screen, but the following manual approach works fine. Go to init 5, login as root, and run: sax2 -l (note the -small L- switch, for lowres) Choose the relevant screen res and frequency (note that you may need to experiment with this - the Hercules screen was supposed to run at 72Hz, but in fact it only works in 1024x768 if you use 60Hz). Choose bit-depth (eg Neverwinter Nights will not run on any other bit-depth than 24) and 3D. Test and save, and then logout. Login as your user, and startx.
