Hello listmates.
I've got 11.3 up and running happily on my ThinkPad T61p (nVidia) and all is well except that while running Compiz I can't get the desktop to be transparent - I'd like to be able to see the other desktops on the cube and any thing like gears or fish on the inside.
I've installed the full ccsm utility and have adjusted the opacity while not rotating setting to where I'm used to having it, but no setting produces anything other than 100% opacity for the desktop.
Jay, It sounds like you are experiencing problems with "compositing" itself. Recall, Gnome itself has the ability to enable/disable "compositing" so that may be an issue. (I can't recall exactly where that setting is at the moment -- perhaps in gconf-editor -> metacity) The other thing you will want to look at is you video card module. (your xf86-video-whatevercard) If you do not have the correct module loading for your card, that may have an influence on compositing as well. (although module problems generally result in the whitescreen of death, but it is something to check) Your compiz settings are correct. The setting: ccsm -> Desktop Cube -> Transparent Cube -> Opacity During Rotation is the setting that controls the cube opacity that you are talking about. I generally run it between 40%-60% depending on the amount of desktop I want visible. You will be able to see all the way through the cube/cylinder/sphere with any setting in that range if compositing is working correctly. Another issue worth checking is to make sure you are getting all your compiz packages from the same place. There are two repositories with different versions of compiz in them that are maintained by two different people. They are: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/Compiz/ (by Dominique) http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/ (by J. aka CyberOrg) You may want to try completely removing the compiz you have installed and loading all fresh copies from one repo or the other. (both are at 8.6 at present) Note, you can use the 'fusion-icon' package from XGL with the compiz packages from 'Compiz', but don't mix the actual compiz packages or the libraries. Emerald decorator will work with compiz from either repo. To wipe compiz and start over, just use: rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep "compiz\|ccsm\|fusion\|emerald") You will get one or two more dependencies that you can either add to the command line to remove, or, I just add the --nodeps option since I'm about to reinstall the same packages anyway. I'll be that once you get a consistent install of compiz, the compositing will work like it should. P.S. -- I running the packages from the 'Compiz' repo right now... Good luck. -- David C.
