I would have tried reiserfs too. Reiserfs did "tail packing", which really helped when you had large numbers of files smaller than your disk block size. I think BTRFS packs tails too, right?
I tested btrfs with many thousands of small files in the same directory, and it crashed the kernel, besides becoming slower every minute as it became fuller.
