Lets look at how *I* use "-f"
I run 'zypper up' and it tells me that various packages aren't going to be loaded. Priority, vendor ... Something.
So I run zypper info and stuff and find out what is installed and why it isn't going to be installed.
Then and only then and only IF there is some reason for installing that version I use the "-f" and I specify the full revision, not just the base package name. I specify EXACTLY what I want installed. EXACTLY! [...]
"--force" is even necessary for reinstalling a package of the same version. And suggested by zypper.
OK, so by me mentioning that LO 4.2 is available I started an avalanche...... But there is a small serious side-effect of installing LO directly from the source (libreoffice.org). When you click on Gecko["Start"]>Recently Used and then right-click on an entry (bottom part) and select Clear Recent Documents the documents are NOT deleted from that list of recently used documents. They DO disappear at the time when you perform the above but the next time you boot the system the list will re-appear. So, if you are trying to hide some billets-doux to your amour from your wife/husband (of either sex, to be politically correct naturally) then you are in trouble :-) . Reason for this is that LO from LO.org puts the viewed files in ~.kde/share/apps/RecentDocuments and NOT ~.kde4/............. Just thought that I would let you know.......
