This is really bad on a 64bit system but seems to be a problem with PCI in upper 1GB.

guess you haven't enabled the use in your bios.
No, there is no option in BIOS to "enable" complete 4GB. It is a Lenovo Thinkpad Z61p and with PAE-enabled (standard-SUSE) 32bit kernel and 64bit kernel it doesn't recognize my memory!
