Hi Joe, Thanks for the help. I booted to SuSE #1 install CD, then chose 'Rescue System' - chose english, then got this prompt: Rescue login: If I type 'root' then it gives me this: Rescue:~ # (it did not ask for my password) If I try and login as someone else then it will ask for a password but no matter what I put in it says 'login failed'. Anyway, I type 'root' at the Rescue Login: prompt and with no password I get this: Rescue:~ # Then I type '/dev/hdd3 /mnt' And I get 'access denied' This is my setup: Disk 1 (160 gig HD) XP Home 80 gig Swap 1 gig SuSE 79 gig Disk 2 (80 gig HD)(used for storage only) FAT32 25 gig FAT32 25 gig FAT32 30 gig Thanks Russ Joe Morris (NTM) wrote:

I edited the GRUB conf file in YaST and now it won't work. I tinkered and tinkered but finally just did a fixmbr with mt XP CD so I could boot to something.
I tried booting to the SuSE fix but didn't know enough about Linux commands to do what I wanted.
I don't know what you mean by SuSE fix, but try booting to the Rescue system, login with your root passwd. Then, mount /dev/hdxx /mnt (choose your root partition with the xx's). If you have a separate boot partition, mount it as mount /dev/hdxx /mnt/boot. Then, chroot /mnt. Then, grub-install /dev/hda (Assuming that is the drive you are booting from). Then, Ctl-Alt-Del to reboot. HTH.
