in order to use systemd for suspending I deleted the packages pm-utils and suspend. With removing suspend, plymouth was removed as well.
I wonder why does plymouth need suspend!?
I wonder about that as well.
I removed plymouth, and parts of it (libply2, libply-splash-core2, and libply-boot-client) forced removal of package suspend, causing hibernate to fail silently.
Note that you report the opposite of what Malte reported. plymouth needs suspend is not the same as suspend needs plymouth. And if both are true, that's most definitely a bug!
