Hi,
I am posting this mail after reading all the mail from Gil, Stan, etc..
It's not as bad as Gil's but still ...
I did a clean install of 9.3 yesterday. The problem is that after the install the screen looks hazy than it's previously.
My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 793DF. The product manual says it has a max resolution of 1280 x 1024 at 60 Hz and a display 312+/-4 mm and 234+/-4 mm. H Sync 30-70 Hz and v Sync 50-160 Hz. I started SaX2 and set all these settings. In SaX2 there's no entry for the monitor I mentioned. So I set to VESA.
I would like to know if any one of you guys have an optimum setting for this monitor or if anything else might help.
These are the lines from xorg.conf (got from Gil, etc. mails).
Section "Monitor" Option "CalcAlgorithm" "CheckDesktopGeometry" DisplaySize 320 240 HorizSync 31-70 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "1280X1024@75HZ" VendorName "--> VESA" VertRefresh 50-75 UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection
[...]
Any help? It's straining my eyes a lot?
Chaitanya.

Chaitanya, As you can see from the part I left in the mail, the settings you say the monitor can do and what was used are quite a bit different. Although you might be capable of 1280 x 1024, I don't think I would run it over 1024 x 768 on a 17" CRT type. Just for the sake of your eyes if nothing else! ;o)
Also, when doing settings in Sax2, did you check the monitor list for your model? If it's not there, then choose something very close, out of the Samsung model list, and alter the settings on vertical & horz to match your monitor. Quite likely there is a model very close to yours if not exact. That should take care of the correct settings and give you a good screen. I suspect, from your xorg.conf readings, that 1280x1024 is just too much for that monitor with those settings. You are not getting nearly the scan rates you should. You can also edit the monitor database to add yours, if you like. You might also try the button that says "Have Disk" and use the disk that came with the monitor to get it's readings.
good luck, Lee
At least three ways to fix this. 1. Go to a console screen such as Ctl+Alt+F1 and login as root. Enter "init 3" to shutdown X. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and put in the correct values.
Section "Monitor" Option "CalcAlgorithm" "CheckDesktopGeometry" DisplaySize 320 240 Change to 312 234 HorizSync 31-70 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "1280X1024@75HZ" VendorName "--> VESA" VertRefresh 50-75 Change to 50-160 UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection
Save and then ""init 5" and you should be good to go. 2. Go to a console screen such as Ctl+Alt+F1 and login as root. Enter "init 3" to shutdown X. Use sax2 and configure the current settings. Go to the Monitor section and choose the "Have Disk" option. Use the Samsung disk/CD and the Windows monitor definition file. This should put almost the same parameters into /etc/X11/xorg.conf as 1. above. Save and test config. Then "init 5" and you should be good to go. 3. Go to a console screen such as Ctl+Alt+F1 and login as root. Enter "init 3" to shutdown X. Edit /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/api/data/cdb/Monitors and add in your Samsung 793DF monitor's parameters somewhere in the Samsung area after the 770S around line 31368 or so. You'll need to know some additional info such as the DDC= code which you can find in your sax2 log at /var/log/SaX.log. Search for a line similar to this: (II) RADEON(0): Manufacturer: SAM Model: 2d Serial#: 1095643449 MIne is "Model: 2d" for A SyncMaster 955DF. Yours will be different but pad it to 4 characters with leading zeros if necessary. Replace the 4 x's in the DDC=SAM below with your Model: ????. #============================================== # SYNCMASTER 793DF #---------------------------------------------- SAMSUNG:SYNCMASTER 793DF { DDC=SAMxxxx Option=DPMS Hsync=30-70 Resolution=1280x1024 Vsync=50-160 } After this go into sax2 and your monitor should be properly detected. Make sure the screen geometry is correct at the 312mm x 234mm. Very important for good font rendering. Test, save, exit and then "init 5". All 3 methods do the same thing: give you the proper parameters for your monitor in sax. #3 is more permanent until SUSE updates that Monitors file. Please file a bug report with Novell at https://bugzilla.novell.com/index.cgi and they'll get this monitor added for future releases so we won't have to do this by hand anymore. Reminds me I have to do the same on my 955DF because they have the Vsync backwards at 160-50 so nothing works for me at first. Stan
