Do you have the usb-storage module loaded? type lsmod at a command prompt. You should see a list of modules, and hopefully one is usb-storage. If it's not there then as root modprobe usb-storage will load it for you. Now mount your drive - I find that I don't need the vfat filesystem type set, and leave it as auto, i.e. mount /dev/sda1 /media/camera Hope that helps.
