Are you sure? Do you mean either "xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap" or "xmodmap ~/Xmodmap"? (depending on whether the file is actually called "Xmodmap", or ".Xmodmap", which is more usual...)

Sorry, I meant "xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap" The file is called .Xmodmap (with the dot in front).
