Now, the start was OK, but when I tried to run the x-windows (startx), I got the following error:
There is no link /var/X11R6/bin/X to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_xxxx which is the binary of the installed X-server. Please link the files as mentioned above or install the X-server and run xf86config again. I'm aborting now.
you need to configure x with either XF86Setup or xf86config. you can add users through the "useradd" and "passwd" commands, or through user adminisrtation. both user administration and X setup are achieved through yast. just type "yast" and follow the appropriate paths.
Did that with XF86Setup, didn't work... then I tried Xf86config, and it typed the X link to my /var/X11R6/bin, but keep getting an err:
The file XF86_xxxx(binary of X-server) doesn't seem to be a binary file. Please check it or/and install a new X-server-binary. I'm aborting now.
Tried once and again, changed configurations, installed servers,... nothing as yet. Any idea anyone?
Thank you.
Horacio.
This has happened to me too. Cured it by simply typing:
ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/X /var/X11R6/bin/XF86_P9000
Whoops -- typed in my own server without thinking! You may have to first erase X. In my experience neither running yast nor reinstalling the server helps. Of course you must have a usable XF86Config file.

Ok, thanks Michael, Bob and Dana for your responses. My Xwindows are already up and running. Just in case it's of someone's help, here goes the way around: Video card specifications: Chipset: S3 Trio64V+ Memory: 2048 kB RAMDAC: Generic 8-bit pseudocolor DAC (with 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-bit mode)) Thereafter, the X-server should be XF86_S3 There was an X link from /usr/X11R6/bin/X to /var/X11R6/bin/X and from here to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_S3 but XF86_S3 did not show there, so it was obviously missing. The problem here was that in the distribution it shows as xs3, which I did not select for setting up since I thought it was xs3v Now, the x-windows look just great (was it just by chance that the fvwm2 background is the same one I have for Win95?). I launched the KDE and seems to work perfectly as well... and looks even better. I hope Wine does work as well. Thanks to everyone. One terribly basic question: how can I make an 'ls' and make it work like 'more' (or rather like 'less')?
