but the machine still doesn't make a sound. Also, if I login as root in kdm, there is still no sound.

I also had a similar problem when I upgraded from 10.2 to 10.3. What I did was to modify the file /etc/modprobe.d/sound This file contained "options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0" I changed it to "options snd-hda-intel model=auto enable=1 index=0" Don't know why, but it worked for me.
