still indicates Permission denied but it is set executable and owned by me and ran by me.
Check that the partition is not mounted "noexec":
mount | grep exec
ah, a winner. and I have no idea why it was mounted noexec, changed to exec and script is running as expected.
is "noexec" standard on xfs partitions?
