That's where I was looking. I have often used Wireshark on a lot of systems, to see just what's happening. If the modem is sending SMTP or syslog traffic intended for the user, then it would have to be on the Ethernet port. On the other hand, if it was intended only for the ISP, as is likely, then it wouldn't be seen on the Ethernet side. If the OP is to use either to determine if the link is down, then it has to appear at the Ethernet port in order for him to do something with it. Incidentally, I have often looked at the cable modem traffic and seen ICMP & ARP traffic that had nothing to do with my equipment.
