Installing OpenOffice_org-gnome and OpenOffice_org-kde seems to have solved it. (at least it did for gnome, I have checked kde yet, but I'll bet it's fixed).

Yep, it fixed it in kde too! Now, I wonder how in the heck those packages got removed. When I did my original OO package selection, I always include the kde and gnome packages, just like I do with Compiz.
