No, it's not. I can;t open a document from within the app because there are none listed. If you click on "Open" from the dropdown list nothing happens, Neither are there any Recent Documents when clicked on. Now, in addition, if I close Libre Office (after not being able to do anything) it will not open again. I must completely restart my session to get it back
Well, I have seen many reports about libreoffice with several symtoms, including those. Sometimes they write here, sometimes in the forum.
I would check that list to see if you have something from the other suite.

Mmm... then add the stable libreoffice repo, and update to a newer version, if it exists. I don't know if the old version of openoffice is still available, perhaps in the oss repo.
