Two more observations: On one computer, it seems I can hit 'cancel' and then re-attempt login. Once I am logged in, I've launched the disk utility, clicked the 'play' button to mount a partition from another drive, at which point I am prompted for the 'administrator' password. Upon supplying the root password for the mounting operation, it just hangs and doesn't do anything until I hit the 'cancel' button.
