Did you reboot and check the bevaviours of Rosegarden etc. after this?
Yes, rosegarden starts now. I haven't worked with it yet but it should be OK.
In today's PCs, sound and video chips are usually installed in the chipset on the motherboard, and if we try to use an external video card and/or sound card, the video chip and/or sound chip on the chipset must be disabled in the BIOS setting. If we do not set the video chip and/or sound chip on the chipset to "disabled" in the BIOS, we will have problems using the PC just like you.
For one thing my DURGOD gaming keyboard allows me to get into BIOS maybe one out of 100 tries, holding DEL and/or F2 just doesn't do BIOS. But because of this I did buy a stby $10 cheapo keyboard that I have to plug in when I want BIOS. Not very interesting, so most of the time I just let it reset to defaults whenever it throws a fit. And other than the wired LAN I don't think I can disable much.
In addition, sound chips are usually installed in recent external video cards, and if we do not use this chip, we must also set it disable, but this can only be done within the OS that has been booted. In your case, xonar's driver and intel's driver were fighting over the device.
I bought this Asus Crosshair-IV many years ago, it was a big mistake. My next one will have on-board NOTHING, I certainly have less than no use for 3.5mm audio connectors until they are totally redesigned to assure that connection interrupts are IMPOSSIBLE.
