hELP! kde HANGS

Since yesterday KDE hangs when working on installing the desktop. A normal shutdown is not possible so I have to stop the computerwith the reset button. When I use root everything works fine and when I used su in the console I discovered that I also had a normal desktop (although not my usual. I am using SuSe 8 with KDE 3.0 (not yet updated). Where could I find out where the loading of KDE hangs? I suppose there must be a log file. How could I restore my KDE? -- NTReader v0.36w(P)/Beta (Registered) in conjunction with Net-Tamer.
