What I really did was install everything reasonable concerning SSL/Mozilla from SUSE DVD and copy the configure options from J. Ogley srpm. I had the same problem - it compiled fine and said it was putting the ssl stuff in, but when I ran it it wouldn't work.
I ended up downloading the tarball from gaim.sourceforge.net and doing: ./configure --prefix=/opt/gnome2 make make install and it works beautiful. This is 8.2 by the way. I tried James' package (for 9.0) and it worked except that the images were missing. Guess 8.2 and 9.0's gnome differ a bit... Hans
