Kai, Can I refer you to "Samba 3 by example" at http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/ You'll find this to be very useful and informative. Can I also suggest that wireshark (formerly ethereal) is a Really Useful Tool that everyone who is troubleshooting network issues should get familiar with. Another tip: if you're not running a local dns server make sure that your samba server is listed in your hosts file on both the Windows and Linux clients. Read man smb.conf and take note of the default settings. You can strip out of your config file anything other than what you want to change from the default setting.
