I suggest using OpenWRT for this. It's a linux distro designed for routers, but you can also install it on x86 PC. It has a web ui, that allows to configure it all.
And before you actually reinstall your system, you can try to reproduce your environment with virtual machines and try there. Both VirtualBox and libvirtd are fine.
not forget virt-manager and qemu
virt-manager is a ui frontend for libvirtd and qemu is used by libvirtd to run the vms. I really hate writing raw qemu commands, it's nighthmare. libvirtd does this for me.
