Thanks to Anders' help he showed me the solution to this. What you need to do is in Konquorer go up to: Settings--configure konquorer--file associations Then in file associations choose the file type that is opening up automatically in the File manager without prompting you. Like for me it was *.rpm. So you go in the file associations under applications and look for x-rpm and select it. Then highlight the "File Manager" that you see in the application preference order and click on "remove" then apply and then next time you go to get an rpm file you'll be prompted what you want to do with it. You probably can even set this type of behavior for all files if you wanted by messing with the first file association "all files" but until I get used to some things I'll just stick to manually changing the ones I want.
