After I start this post, Thunderbird behaves correctly on the old and new mail.
I applied an update today. 68.1.1 (64-bit)
Thunderbird can stay for minutes without doing the correct automated spelling, till I go to the address header, delete the "g" out of ".org", and write it again. That instant it replaces «opensuse@opensuse.org» with «oS-en <opensuse@opensuse.org>» and the spell checker switches on, and the red lines disappear.
Did # zypper MozillaThunderbird MozillaFirefox MozillaFirefox-branding-upstream before the 68 update could be applied to my working box -- all still good here. There are issues with the mid-release version jump from 60esr to 68esr. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
