I took Lenz's suggestion and upgraded to the newest Yast (in the 6.0 directory on the SuSE ftp site, package a1). It solved the problem. Probably the reason he didn't see the problem we did is that he's been using the new version. (Aside to Lenz: you might want to verify that the old Yast has the slow search on your system, so as to be sure that an upgrade always solves the problem.)
