You can pass any parameter you want by simply typing <image> <parameter> at the lilo prompt. Most people call their Linux image `linux', that's why linux single works.
I know it is possible with "Red Hat" to pass "linux single" at lilo without special definition in the lilo.conf file.
Of course only if you have an image called linux. If you don't it will probably not work.
