It has been argued that it is a kernel design flaw (in order to be poxix compliant), when doing renaming-moving-deleting.old file thing in one op, each operation is not guaranteed to be complete unless you do a sync in between. XFS is much affected by this, ext4 could be. But it is not really a fault of those filesystems.
