Make sure you have the latest kernel, it works for me, it takes a few seconds but when I plug the USB key I end up getting valid listings in /media. My PC has one external 200GB USB2 MAXTOR 5000DV (with one FAT and one ext3 partition) and I often plug/unplug a "noname" 256MB USB key between home and work (FAT). Since the automatically generated names are not that user-friendly, I made symbolic links (maxtor1,maxtor2,key1). May be it would be useful to add an option to Yast2 to give symbolic names to currently mounted devices and to have the tools automatically create them when a device is mounted (may be it's even already possible but I could not find it).
