I have a dial-up connection. If I start Netscape 4.78 or Netscape 6.2.1 and go to http://localhost/ without dialing up first, I get a 20 second delay before I connect. There is no such delay with konqueror or opera. I get the same effect with http://127.0.0.1/ and http//uyea.local/. Nor is there a delay if I have connected first to my ISP (through and ISDN TA). /etc/hosts/ gets changed on dialup/disconnect. Probably unrelated: Netscape 4.78 is very varied in the time it takes to startup. I start both Netscape 4.78 and Netscape 6.2.1 from the desktop using icons with absolute paths to the applications. Typically Netscape 4.78 is for mail and 6.2.1 for browsing. Occasionally if I start Netscape 6.2.1, then Netscape 4.78 Messenger, I end up with Netscape 6.2.1 Messenger and Navigator and can't start 4.78 until I've killed 6.2.1. A raw connection to Apache gives: jdl@uyea:~> telnet localhost 80 Trying ::1... telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. Can anyone suggest a fix? What does 'Trying ::1...' mean? JDL
