I don't know what prompted SuSE to do this but it doesn't look very good to me. I think the fact that you had such big collection of apps at such a good price made SuSE very attractive.
And a nightmare for the beginner, who is totally confused by the sheer amount of packages, I would like to add.
Its no longer the case though. Now, with the splitting of the distro, it has lost a lot of value which it had. I always disliked RedHat for this.
What makes you think so? If you still want to have the bells and whistles, go for the Professional version.
For the benefit of all of us here, could you please explain the idea behind this move? I don't think any one here on the list is happy with this split. It would force most of us not to buy the box but wait for the FTP download, which is always very late. RedHat does better here. Their distro is available at the FTP site before or no later than a new release.
The ftp version will be the same as before, including all the packages from the full (now Professional) version. We just created a new product for the newbie, that just comes with an assorted selection of packages - this is the Personal Edition. The "old" version now simply has a new name, more manuals and more support.
Maybe your marketing guys have a very valid reasons. But do you guys really think the boxes would give you enough revenue?
Most of us don't even need all those manuals you are giving. We just need the CDs. Now, forcing us to pay more than what we should isn't new to me. I think I have seen it before. I thought it would never happen to me again.
Then go for the upgrade version, which only consists of the 6 CDs and a small booklet. I am sure, it will be sold it in the US, too.
I am very disappointed by all this. SuSE will never be the same for me again. I don't think I will ever buy a box now.
Sorry if you think about it like that - but I cannot do anything about this. IMHO the splitting has some good reasons. Of course it is always a pain, if things change. I hope I was able to give you some background about the reasons behind all this.
