I followed the steps at https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Animated_penguin_GRUB_splash_screen (first it was necessary to install gfxboot which wasn't installed at installation), and verified that /boot/message does indeed show "penguin=100". Clearly, there is something I still need to do that isn't mentioned in that URL, because I still see the default boot screen. This is the first time I've ever played with anything to do with the boot process, so any help is greatly appreciated.
What you didn't do, since it wasn't mentioned, was replace Grub 2 with Grub. I just updated that page. It was long overdue. Gfxboot AFAICT only works with Grub 0.97, which I still use on all MBR PCs. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Whatever else you get, get wisdom."
