I think that old repos are left in the configuration renamed to something like old or deactivated or something, I don't remember the details.
One warning: with upgrades you should always do a full backup. Thus, if things go bad you can restore your previously working system, retry, or install fresh.
It is also a good idea for fresh installs, of course. Always, that is.
