Where/what is the setting/alias in openSuSE that causes 'man' to display the whatis list of available man pages instead of the first man page found?
The environment variable to set in order to return the first man page found is MAN_POSIXLY_CORRECT. If it is not set, man displays a list of man pages. However, this doesn't appear in the man page; perhaps worthy of a bug report?
Peter, Trying to chase down this issue, I've been bouncing back and forth between my Arch boxes and openSuSE. Arch does not set the MAN_POSIXLY_CORRECT environment variable and the man behavior is the default display first page found. Is there some other way this is controlled? I've tested on openSuSE and 'export MAN_POSIXLY_CORRECT=0' does restore default behavior, but I'm still curious if this can be set/unset another way. -- David C.
