But I have a similar problem with Vmware. I have 1.1.2, downloaded and installed by hand rather than off the disk. This also seems to fail to load the module at boot time and later says I have to run vmware-reconfig.pl. When I do, it takes the vmware things down, then puts them back up again, and it all works. After a reboot it's broken again.
Have the same problem, haven't gotten around to solving it though ; ) Since I do not reboot often it isn't a big hassle. Check out the faq and support pages at vmware.
I had a terrible problem once getting vmware started. vmware-config.pl wouldn't run either, complaining about the kernel. The fix for me was: make mrproper (which *really* cleans out your kernel build environment You'll have to re-enter all your kernel choices again) make depend make bzImage (whatever your kernel) mv arch/i386/boot/..... /....... make modules make modules_install lilo sync reboot Then run vmware-config.pl again.
