Okay, I had this one licked but now it's come back to haunt me. I'm using wvdial on my SuSE box at home to dial my ISP. It was working fine (except for mysterious messages about not being able to modify PAP secrets and CHAP secrets, but it still worked) untill last night. I recompiled my kernel from the sources on the 6.2 disk. I didn't change any of the networking functions except the ones I knew I didn't need. I run wvdial and it seems to connect as usual, but I can't ping anything (tried suse.com and intel) and Netscape gave me what seemed to be DNS related errors (Couldn't find host, check name, blah, blah). I double checked the resolve.conf file and my nameservers are there. I double checked my group info and I am part of the dialup and modem groups.
