I had to fight this horrible interface for a longtime before getting a working console, which is a browser pop-up window. Is there no way to start a standalone, dedicated, console, not part of a browser? Like in version 1.x? This is really horrible. Who got this idea, wasn't he fired instantly? :-/
There is no standalone console in Server 2, and probably never will be one. This change was met with a big uproar in VMware forums, but the VMware folks kept defending their decision. Their line of reasoning is along (1) it brings Server 2 inline with ESX and other server products, (2) this is a server and one doesn't need the console often anyhow, (3) if one wants a workstation product, one shall use VMware Workstation or Player and not Server 2.
Pfff!
The argument is not consistent, though; since there are VI clients for Windows, just not for Linux. What I see is that VMware doesn't see a big market in Linux endpoints for their corporate products, they assume Windows there.
Very possibly.
Many Server 1 users don't think so, me included. Time will show if users start to vote with their feet and move to other Linux virtualization products.
I'd do that... but what i virtualize is old windows systems that are not well suported by virtualbox. I wonder... could a machine created with the server be run with the player? Provided that the player is free (of charge), I don't remember.
And very slow... i have to wait minutes for actions!
I haven't used Server 2 with the 11.2 patches, only with 11.1. There it was not slower, just more inconvenient cf. console usage.
No, the console seems to be more or less similar in speed. What is very slow is the configuration interface. I wonder if server version 1 will be adapted to this new kernel, that would be the best solution (for me, that is). - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
