I know that, in my case, thunderbird stalls periodically at a fixed interval, when it polls the local leafnode nntp store (which is big and fast). It takes several seconds to do it, and doesn't respond to the keyboard or refresh the display meanwhile. But everything else in the computer continues working fine (except perhaps disk i/o).
This is a different thing than what some of you describe that the entire computer stalls.
I agree. I also see Firefox hogging CPU cycles and gradually accumulating memory, but this is not the effect I was describing in the original post. That problem appears to have been solved by an update to kwin_x11. See Message ID <552A152D.30208@barrowhillfarm.org.uk> in another part of this thread.
