Well, if your talking about RH 9.0 then yes it's got much newer versions of a lot of the packages including X and the kernel, but I'd bet it's not the amount of RAM that you have that's making the screen go all wanky. It's the Radeon card. I have and have had 1.5G of ram in my machine since 7.3 was current and I didn't have any issues that were caused by the amount of memory. I would say that the first thing to look at is the Radeon card and the second may be that your motherboard has a setting that's making it puke...but I doubt it. I'd say it's the brand new unsupported card.
I had the same problem with Geforce 4 4800SE (that I changed card into a Radeon one).
The motherboard is Asus P4G8X Deluxe using the Intel E7205 chipset, and that one is new, though.
Latest Manrake gives a kernel panic, but a textual install, and then configuring X lets me use Xfree86 driver (radeon) for 2D. No 3D since ATI has not released drivers for Xfree86 4.3
SuSE 8.1 gives a blank screen, but no kernel panic.
Knoppix 3.2 gives a blank screen, but after a while the screen reappears.
Latest Redhat works fines using Xfree86 driver, while the previos one I used the driver form ATI (which works well)
Cheers Sigfred
the vesafb device, that's being used for the graphical install cannot handle the latest cards. Solutions: - do a textual install - swap the card for an older one during install - wait for 8.2 I once found that the gfx install failed, and I had a black screen, but doing the Ctrl-Fx dance finally brounght me to another virtualk terminal (Ctrl-F2 -> tty2 I think) on which a text based installer was happily waiting for my keypresses .. Next time round on a similar machine, i just got a black screen and had to go for textmode install though ...
