Listmates, I hope someone can help me with this problem that I am having. I have recently installed openSUSE 11.1 on this machine, and for my desktop, I choose KDE 4.1, which I then upgraded to 4.2. So far I have been very happy with KDE 4.2. It looks better than 4.1 and feels a lot more stable. Under 4.1, I had Plasma crash on me quite often, but nothing of the sort in 4.2. The only problem that I am having is with sound. This system has an Intel 82801G HDA sound card, which uses the ICH7 chipset, if I'm not mistaken. The snd_hda_intel module has been loaded for this soundcard. And it does work, most of the time. However, after being logged in for a while, suddenly I am notified that the audio device HDA Intel IEC958 Digital Audio Output is not working properly and that the system is falling back to the device HDA Intel (VT1708B Analog) device. At this point, my sound stops working. But not for all programs. Movies in Youtube may still have sound, but system sounds (like a dialog popping up) are no longer played. I have checked the output of dmseg and /var/log/messages, but there's nothing in there about sound devices not working. When I look in the Multimedia System Settings, I can see several sound devices listed, for several categories. For notifications, I see the following devices: - HDA Intel (VT1708B Analog) - HDA Intel (VT1708B Digital) - HDA Intel VT1708B Digital (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output) - Unknown I am assuming that the first three are different output options of my audio hardware. The last one, I have no idea. I don't have another audio device plugged in. I heard there were problems with PulseAudio, so I have removed that from my system, but this has not changed the situation. Anyone care to make an educated guess what's wrong, or has some pointers to put me on the right track?
